He tells us the average amount of time a parent spends with their kids each week, which is, sadly, mind blowing. Tom provides some very important rules that every parent should put into practice. This week's show features Allen Carter the Author of Letters from a Father. For years now, it has been Allen Carter’s habit to write a monthly letter to his children during their teenage years. The letters cover an amazing array of life lessons that also show an intimate glimpse of one family’s life journey. He tells how writing letters to his kids provided him an opportunity to stay connected to his kids and draw value from them. There are almost 70 chapters in this book touching on subjects including, Love, Patience, Taking Risks, Believe in Yourself, Don’t Play It Safe, Anxiety, God’s Desire and so much more. One of my favorites was the chapter on Science and Faith. In our interview Allen breaks down the meaning behind the chapters. He explains just how important a father is to his kids.

Tommy Maloney from the podcast Blending the Family came on the show to talk about his new book “My Dad’s Advice at 5:04 AM” and where the title comes from. We stated with why a child should not see a parent leave. We talked about dating after a divorce. Tommy really explains how we as fathers can build quality time with our kids. Why he never wanted to get married or have kids. He discusses how men will sometimes battle depression. The advice Tommy learned from Zig Ziglar on how to handle depression. He shared what it was like to be a stay-at-home dad, why he did it, and a tip he learned from stay-at-home moms. One of the key things I think from this book and for people bringing kids into a relationship is the pack that Tommy and his wife made when they started dating. Ways to introduce the kids to the person you are dating. We discuss how important it is for men to know where they can find resources.
