Appearing on this week’s episode from Stony Brook Psychotherapy & Wellness is psychologist Dr. John G. Cottone who has a private practice in Stony Brook, New York. He’s here to talk about an article I read of his entitled Fathers and Sons: Masculinity, Men, and Relationships. It highlights the tricky nature of relationships between men. Being a father and a son himself he informs us as to why relationships matter and why men should find a therapist to strengthen relationships. He talks about the unwritten rules of the pecking order between a father and son and males’ social groups. He explains how this pecking order keeps males avoiding traits like tenderness and emotional sensitivity that would maybe make them look vulnerable. Dr. Cottone has numerous peer-reviewed research publications in neuroscience, psychiatry, psychotherapy outcome and moral reasoning. He is also a regular contributor to Psychology Today where he has a blog entitled The Cube, and he is the author of three books, including, Who Are You? Essential Questions for Hitchhikers on the Road of Truth.
